London Olympics 2012, Some interesting facts..
This is the third time that London is crowned the host city, the first time they were honoured was in 1908
and then again in 1948. London is also lucky to be the ONLY city to have hosted the event thrice.
The reason why London Olympics is referred as London Olympics is because when choosing locations for the Olympic Games, the IOC specifically gives the honor of holding the Games to a city rather than a country.
The gold medals at the London Olympics won’t be pure Gold in fact Gold medals haven’t been pure gold in 96 years. The 1912 Olympics was the last time that gold medals were solid gold. Ever since, they’ve been silver with gold plating.
London also reserves the honor of holding the longest Olympics. In 1908, the London Olympics went on for 187 days… they started in April and didn’t end until October.
Okay this particular fact is not related to London Olympics specifically but nevertheless interesting, you would be amazed to know that the athletes who took part in the first ever Olympics were all nude and it only consisted of one game: marathon.
London 2012 is also the costliest Olympics to date (USD14.8 billion), with Barcelona Olympics 1992 (USD11.4 billion) (USD6 billion) ranking second and Montreal 1976 standing at third position.
The roof over the London 2012 stadium is not made of steel or concrete but of PVC (fabric). It is designed to keep costs and some of the environmental impact down on a key part of the structure that is due to be dismantled.
